Created by Sarlo six years ago, the Wood-Ridge Mayor’s 5K takes locals on a 3.1-mile journey through the borough.
“After being very involved in sports growing up, in high school and college, I got busy in my everyday life and had a little heath scare in my mid 30s,” said Sarlo, who is also a New Jersey state senator.
Respiratory trouble put the mayor on his back for a couple of days. So he decide to make a change."II took up running,” he said.
“I thought this race was a great way to get the community involved in running,” Sarlo added.
Over the past five years, the race has raised around $30,000, according to Ezio Altamura, race chairperson and council president.
On average the even attracts about 250 people, including runners and walkers alike -- even those pushing strollers.
“We just want people to get out there and donate and be part of this,” Altamura said.
